Leading up to the June 2025 launch of the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy collection, Wizards of the Coast shared multiple cards from the crossover online and at events, and we have a look at a counterpart card of Ardyn Izunia from FFXV. It is a reskinned variant of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire.

As this FFXV Magic the Gathering Ardyn Izunia card is a counterpart of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire, it is functionally identical. He is a Legendary Creature - Demon Rogue. Its ability allows you to set up your next move by moving a card to the top of your deck.

Here’s a closer look at this Ardyn Izunia version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire:

This isn’t the first time a crossover version of Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire appeared. The Secret Lair x Chuck set of cards based on the Child’s Play series featured a reskin of it of Tiffany, Bride of Chucky.

We also know of other Ardyn Magic the Gathering FFXV cards in this Final Fantasy crossover collection. The Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over set includes one. That features him on Unseat the Usurper – Sorcery, which is a reskin of Praetor’s Grasp.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 27, 2025, and the official site for the cards is now open. Pre-releases happen on June 6, 2025. Orders for the three Secret Lair sets open at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025.

3 Secret Lair Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Drops Debut in June

Wizards of the Coast announced the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy crossover will also include three Secret Lair drops of special cards. These will consist of three sets, each one consisting of five cards. The non-foil versions will be $29.99, while the rainbow foil ones will be $39.99. English and Japanese sets will be available. There will also be English and Japanese bundles for $199.99 each that consist of the non-foil and rainbow foil versions of each one. Sales will start via the official site at 9am PT/12pm ET on June 9, 2025. Standard cards and decks are available at stores like Amazon and Best Buy.

The three sets are Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over, Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Grimoire, and Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Weapons. Each of these includes five cards that are Final Fantasy takes on existing ones. Game Over is full of Sorcery cards that involve villains from the series, Grimoire is a mix of Instant and Sorcery abilities from heroes, and all of the Weapons ones involve Artifacts with series’ heroes wielding them.

Here are the full lists of each card in each set:

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Game Over
    • Final Fantasy VI Merciless Poisoning - Sorcery (Toxic Deluge)
    • Final Fantasy VII Meteorfall - Sorcery (Star of Extinction)
    • Final Fantasy VIII Absorb into Time - Sorcery (Temporal Extortion)
    • Final Fantasy X Spira’s Punishment - Sorcery (Day of Judgment)
    • Final Fantasy XV Unseat the Usurper - Sorcery (Praetor’s Grasp)

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Grimoire
    • Final Fantasy VII Aerith’s Curaga Magic - Instant (Heroic Intervention)
    • Final Fantasy IX Vivi’s Thunder Magic - Instant (Lightning Bolt)
    • Final Fantasy X Yuna’s Holy Magic - Sorcery (Prismatic Ending)
    • Final Fantasy XIII Hope’s Aero Magic - Instant (Cyclonic Rift)
    • Final Fantasy XV Noctis’ Death Magic - Sorcery (Damn)

  • Secret Lair x Final Fantasy: Weapons
    • Final Fantasy VII Cloud’s Buster Sword - Artifact (Umezawa’s Jitte)
    • Final Fantasy X Tidus’ Brotherhood Sword - Artifact (Sword of Truth and Justice)

    • Final Fantasy XIV Gaia’s Dark Hammer - Artifact (Colossus Hammer)
    • Final Fantasy XVI Clive’s Invictus Blade - Artifact (Blade of Selves)

And here’s a gallery I made showing how all of them look. The first row features the Game Over set. The second is Grimoire. The third is Weapons.

In addition to the bundles, there will be a promo card for these releases. It is a Gilded Lotus Artifact based on Aerith’s flower from FFVII. English and Japanese versions will be available. However, getting one isn’t guaranteed, as they’ll only be included with some of the bundles and, due to being limited, could run out.

Here’s how both of those look:

Tetsuya Nomura Talked About Magic the Gathering FFVII Sephiroth Art

Square Enix revealed a new Magic: The Gathering card depicting FFVII villain Sephiroth, and Tetsuya Nomura shared some insight about the designs for the art on each side, following its reveal at PAX East 2025. The card includes two designs of the character, with one of them being a new design for Safer Sephiroth that differs from his appearance in the original game.

Note: There are spoilers regarding Sephiroth in the original FFVII and FFVII Rebirth below. 6z2c57

The starting side of the card is titled Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier and it shows the character in his iconic black garb, lifting the Masamune sword with both hands. While the card itself obscures this next detail, an original sketch shared by Square Enix shows young Sephiroth at the bottom of the illustration, as he appears in FFVII Ever Crisis.

The other side of the card is titled Sephiroth, One-Winged Angel and it depicts Safer Sephiroth, the most powerful form that the character takes during his final boss fight in the original FFVII. As mentioned above, the new design is different to his classic look. Character designer Tetsuya Nomura said that there is a reason behind Safer Sephiroth looking different in this Magic: The Gathering card than he did in the 1997 release of FFVII, however he confirmed that he can't share more about it.

You can check out the cards and read Nomura’s comment here:

https://twitter.com/finalfantasyvii/status/1921822729013186730

From what Square Enix shared, the card shows Sephiroth with his right arm detached from the wing growing on his right shoulder, unlike the original design. Additionally, underneath the torso there is another Sephiroth head.

This change is reminiscent to Bizarro Sephiroth, one of the final phases of the character in FFVII and the final boss in FFVII Rebirth. Considering the secrecy and Nomura’s words, there is a chance that this design is a hint to how Safer Sephiroth will appear in part 3 of the FFVII Remake project, but we won’t know until the game is out.

The Final Fantasy card set will appear in Magic The Gathering on June 13, 2025.

Magic the Gathering Magic Spotlight Final Fantasy Event Announced

Wizards of the Coast will bring the Magic Spotlight event to Japan in order to celebrate the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set of cards. The free-to-enter event will take place in Chiba, Japan, with people able to enter while there is space between June 27–29, 2025. This will happen the same month the crossover debuts. Registration begins on the official site at 8pm PT/11pm ET on April 16, 2025, which is 12pm JST on April 17, 2025, on a site that opens on April 15, 2025.

While details are still slim, Wizards of the Coast did confirm the Magic Spotlight: Final Fantasy event will include a two-day tournament that costs money to enter, a type of card as a prize, and “side events.” In the case of the match-up, the prize pool consists of $50,000. Everyone who pays to enter gets a “non-foil Japanese-language borderless promo card” of one of the Final Fantasy cards from the new set. Those in the top 128 each get one traditional foil version of that card. The top eight winners will be able to take part in Pro Tour Edge of Eternities. That will be held between September 26-28, 2025, with people needing to head to MagicCon in Atlanta, Georgia to compete.

As a reminder, this is one of many crossovers for Magic the Gathering. One involved Assassin’s Creed. Another featured Doctor Who. Lord of the Rings showed up too. Hatsune Miku and SpongeBob appeared on cards as well.

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy set will launch on June 13, 2025, and pre-orders are open

Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Decks and Cards Briefly Appeared at Best Buy

As pointed out by Wario64 online, Best Buy briefly put up product pages for the Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy decks and booster packs of cards. However, all of the listings are now gone, with only the $19.99 Starter Kit with Cloud and Sephiroth from FFVII showing up in search at the store. This set will roll out on June 13, 2025. While the listings are gone, this does mean we know what the product images for the items look like. [Thanks, Wario64!]

The four Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy Commander Decks we already knew about involve Cloud from FFVII, Y’shtola from FFXIV, Tidus from FFX, and Terra from FFVI. The boxes from those each show how one card looks on the front, confirms there will be legendary traditional foils inside, and notes a Collector Booster Sample Pack will be in the box. So with the Terra one, you get Terra, Herald of Hope, a Legendary Creature Human Wizard Warrior. Tidus, Yuna’s Guardian, a Legendary Creature Human Warrior is in the FFX box. The Legendary Creature Human Soldier Mercenary Cloud, Ex-SOLDIER card is in the FFVII deck. Meanwhile, Legendary Creature Cat Warlock Y’shtola, Night’s Blessed is in the FFXIV one.

Two of the more expensive items will be the Collector Booster and Collector Boosters box. The boosters packs will feature Terra from FFVI on them and may have a serialized card. The Collector Booster has Kefka from FFVI on it may also include a serialized card, but is guaranteed to come with 15 foil and rare cards. People can buy a booster box of 30 standard packs at launch, as well as the aforementioned starter kit with Cloud and Sephiroth decks.

Here are the official product images for all of the items confirmed so far:

The last time we got to see some art for the cards was back in October 2024.

Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that Yoshitaka Amano, who is known for his Final Fantasy art, worked on some of the cards in this set.

https://twitter.com/wizards_magic/status/1891549077654954031

The Magic the Gathering Final Fantasy cards will debut on June 13, 2025.

Wizards of the Coast has given a sneak peek at the new Magic: The Gathering cards for 2025, including the Final Fantasy cards that’ll be part of the Magic: The Gathering Universes Beyond set. The set will come out on June 13, 2025.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a0CgU7bOgNU

People who were at MagicCon: Las Vegas got to see the six of the new cards, which will also be available digitally when they come out. According to Wizards of the Coast, this Magic: The Gathering set will be the largest collection of Final Fantasy artwork in a single game. You’ll be able to get cards of characters and scenes from all of the Final Fantasy games, from the first one to XVI. This will only be the main games, so spin-offs like Theatrhythm will likely not see any representation.

Zakeel Gordon, the Product Architect at WIzards of the Coast, said: “This collaboration is more than just cards. It’s about celebrating decades of iconic characters, legendary stories, and unforgettable moments from one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history. Final Fantasy fans will get to experience these characters in an entirely new way—through the strategic depth and storytelling of Magic: The Gathering.”

You can check out six of the Final Fantasy cards here:

Magic: The Gathering is the first trading card game and came out in 1993. As of February 2023, over fifty million people play the game and Wizards of the Coast printed over twenty billion cards between 2008 and 2016. While cards for the game generally adhere to the lore that’s within the game, Wizards of the Coast began adding collaboration cards as part of its Universes Beyond initiative. In 2022, the company already announced the Final Fantasy collaboration, along with the Assassin’s Creed cards (which came out in July 2024). Other intellectual properties that have appeared in Magic include Hatsune Miku, Jurassic Park, and The Lord of the Rings.

The Final Fantasy set will appear in Magic: The Gathering on June 13, 2025.

Final Fantasy Magic the Gathering Triple Triad

A Final Fantasy collaboration is coming to Magic: The Gathering. Wizards of the Coast made the announcement at GenCon 2023 as part of the Magic at 30 .

Details are sparse on what designs will be featured in the Final Fantasy set. However, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the series will cover the whole series, covering everything from the first game to Final Fantasy XVI. The set will be released physically and will be available on MTG Arena, the digital version of the game.

It’s not the first time that Wizards of the Coast worked with Final Fantasy staff. In 2019, the Japanese release of the War of the Spark expansion featured unique art from Japanese illustrators. One of these was famed Final Fantasy character and logo designer Yoshitaka Amano, who produced artwork of Liliana, Dreadhorde General. Other Japanese artists who've produced artwork for Magic: The Gathering include Yoji Shinkawa and Junji Ito.

The Final Fantasy collaboration will be part of the Universes Beyond series, which features sets based on third-party properties outside of the typical Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons universes. Previous collaborations in this series included Street Fighter, The Lord of the Rings, Stranger Things, and Doctor Who. Wizards of the Coast also confirmed that sets based on Fallout and Assassin’s Creed will also be ing the series.

The Magic: The Gathering Final Fantasy set does not yet have a release date. The most recent game in the series, Final Fantasy XVI, is available now for the PS5.

Dark Alliance

According to a teaser released by Sony, Dark Alliance, a new action-RPG based on Dungeons & Dragons, will release on June 22, 2021. The information comes courtesy of a tweet from the official PlayStation , accompanied by trailer and some gameplay footage:

https://twitter.com/PlayStation/status/1371808620736868370

The tweet itself references the four playable Dark Alliance characters. There's Drizzt Do'Urden, the dual-wielding dark elf (or Drow) ranger, Cattie-brie, a human archer, Bruenor Battlehammer, a dwarven fighter, and Wulfgar, a barbarian warrior. The quartet may sound familiar to fans of the Forgotten Realms D&D setting. Drizzt and his companions were created by fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore and have starred in Forgotten Realms novels and adventures since 1988. They've even appeared in games, such as Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn, and Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone on the PS2.

Dark Alliance itself is a reference to the PS2 era. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was an action-RPG released in 2001 for the PS2 and Xbox. It and its sequel achieved some notoriety for adapting the top-down combat and loot mechanics of the then PC-exclusive Diablo series for consoles. The new Dark Alliance game, however, appears to have swapped the top-down perspective for a third-person character action style, somewhat similar to 2018's God of War. The narrative also turns the clock back somewhat. Through Drizzt and company have been through decades of adventures since their debut, the story of Dark Alliance takes place in the same setting and timeframe as the party's first adventure: 1988's The Crystal Shard. The crew must battle hordes of monsters that have invaded the northern haven of Icewind Dale in search of the Crystal Shard itself.

Players will control the party and take on goblins, frost giants, wraiths, beholders, and other iconic monsters from the D&D monster manuals in solo modes, as well as online and local co-operative play. The PlayStation Blog also offered more details on enemies like the goblins.

Dark Alliance will go on sale on June 22, 2021 on the PlayStation 4, PS5, PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X. Baldur's Gate 3, another game set in the Forgotten Realms setting, is available on PCs in Early Access.
