Nihon Falcom and GungHo Online Entertainment revealed the Japanese and English voice actors for Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter, the remake of the first title in The Legend of Heroes: Trails series.

The video revealing the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Japanese voice cast doesn’t include any samples of how the characters sound in the remake. Instead, the video only shows the new character portraits alongside the names of the actors. The same goes for the English voice cast trailer.

Here is the list of the new Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Japanese voice actors alongside their previous voice actors from the original The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky trilogy.

  • Estelle Bright - Tomoyo Takayanagi (previously Akemi Kanda)
  • Joshua Bright - Natsumi Fujiwara (previously Mitsuki Saiga)
  • Scherazard Harvey - Chika Anzai (previously Yuka Shioyama)
  • Olivier Lenheim - Takehito Koyasu (no change)
  • Kloe Rinz - Hina Yomiya (previously Junko Minaguchi)
  • Agate Crosner - Taku Yashiro (previously Takayuki Kondo)
  • Tita Russell - Hikaru Iida (previously Hiromi Konno)
  • Zin Vathek - Tetsu Inada (no change)

Meanwhile, you can check out the English version of the voice cast reveal here:

While some of the original Japanese voice cast of Trails in the Sky remain in the remake, most of the cast seem to have been changed replaced. However, the recast will not come as a surprise to some people, as the original Japanese voice actor for Joshua Bright, Mitsuki Saiga, showed surprise at the announcement of Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter back in August 2024.

Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter will come out in Fall 2025 for the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. PC players can check out the minimum requirements here.

trails in the sky the 1st chapter gameplay

Falcom posted more screenshots and gameplay footage from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter while showing off the title at the Taipei Game Show 2025. It ed a two-minute-long video comparing the remake to the original game.

You can watch the Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter gameplay video via the Nihon Falcom X (formerly Twitter) :

https://twitter.com/nihonfalcom/status/1883676182555877822

In the video, we can hear an updated version of the main battle theme, as well as see comparisons between FC and Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter. It first starts off with showing the different Craft animations for Estelle, Joshua, Scherazard, and Olivier. Then we can see how exploration and different locales look with the new engine. The original version of the game required a load as you moved between maps. However, we can see how Estelle and Joshua seamlessly make that transition in the remake.

Nihon Falcom first showed off The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter as a surprise announcement at the August 2024 Nintendo Direct. It is a refined remake of Trails in the Sky, which originally came out in 2004. Trails in the Sky is the first of the Trails series, which is part of the The Legend of Heroes series. Trails has gone on for 20 years now, with the 2024 Kai no Kiseki the latest entry.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st Chapter will come out for the PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Windows PC in Fall 2025. PC players can check out the minimum requirements here.

Looking ahead, 2025 appears to be a fantastic year for JRPGs. We already know about some great titles like Atelier Yumia. Plus, there are likely a few JRPGs we still don’t know about yet. Regardless, our staff put together our list of the JRPG titles that are our most anticipated for the year of 2025.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Most Anticipated JRPG of 2025 1j6e6y

Honestly? I'm excited to go through Suikoden I and II again. I loved the games, and playing Eiyuden Chronicle last year made me long for a chance to go through these two incredibly solid entries in the series again. I mean, I could just grab my PSX discs and pop them in, but playing on my Switch in handheld mode would be even more ideal. -- Jenni

Even with highly anticipated JRPGs already announced like Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, my most anticipated JRPG as of right now is The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II. Sure, I can’t wait for Trails in the Sky the 1st, which will remake one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, but I have already played that game. I will always want to try something new and Trails through Daybreak II is just that.

I loved Van and the other of his ragtag team in the first of the Calvard titles, plus the locations of the Republic were terrific to explore. However, the original felt just a tad too short and with a story that felt second to everything else, unlike past Trails games. I hope this sequel will fully live up to the potential of this story arc. Of course, this is with the current info we have right now, so I’m excluding unannounced JRPGs I hope we see in 2025 like a new NieR or Persona 6. -- Cody

My most anticipated JRPG for 2025 is also The Legend of Heroes, though I'm more interested in Trails in the Sky the 1st. Yes, I'm one of those people who played the original one back in the day and then dropped it because the battle system was a bit too slow for my taste. So I never actually got into the game, nor the series. It'll be nice to get into it for real (especially since I actually own a bunch of Trails games that I bought on sale, yet never even started them) and Trails in the Sky the 1st seems like the ultimate starting point. -- Stephanie

1 Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Steam Page Confirms PC Specs 1 minimum requirements

When Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter was first confirmed, the The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky remake only had a Switch version mentioned, but a PC version was revealed and the Steam product page now shares system requirement specs. Only the minimum ones are mentioned, and it doesn’t seem like it will be too taxing to run.

Here are the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Minimum PC specs so far, though the system requirements mentioned some additional notes to keep in mind. While it won’t demand a lot of a computer or handheld gaming system, there will be a Performance Graphics Profile available. It will also be able to run at 60fps.

MINIMUM:

  • OS: Windows 10/11
  • Processor: AMD Ryzen 5 1600
  • Memory: 8 GB RAM
  • Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050
  • DirectX: Version 11
  • Storage: 25 GB available space
  • Additional Notes: Settings: 1080p, 60 FPS, Performance Graphics Profile

There are also eight screenshots on the Trails in the Sky 1st Chapter Steam page, as well as the PC specs for the minimum system requirements. While some feature gameplay and Estelle exploring the world, we also see a story clip of Joshua in a quieter moment and some environmental photo examples.

Here are more examples of how the game will look when it launches.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC via Steam, and it has a Fall 2025 release window.

Trails in the Sky the 1st Switch, PS5, and PC Release Window Set

Back when we first learned about The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st, it was during an August 2024 Nintendo Direct and only involved a Switch version, but now there are PS5 and PC via Steam versions confirmed. All of them will debut in Fall 2025. The website also updated to show all three platforms and note a simultaneous, worldwide release.

GungHo is the company that shared the latest reveals. In the update, it confirmed that there will be all new localization again. It also teased “refined” gameplay. While the description didn’t go into exact details about those types of changes, the new trailer showed some off. It begins by showing Estelle attacking an enemy, before then showing her and Joshua at home in quieter moments. We watch them explore Liberl. After that, we see some real-time battle elements.

Here’s the latest trailer on YouTube, which really focuses on The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st gameplay on the Switch, PS5, and PC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gd9j_NWZGG8&ab_channel=GungHo

As a reminder, when that Switch reveal for Trails in the Sky the 1st did appear in the Nintendo Direct, it was a total surprise to Nihon Falcom. The trailer was submitted, but the company didn’t know it would show up. Since then, we’ve only occasionally heard about the JRPG. For example, one of the last updates involve the official website for the title being updated.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st will come to the Nintendo Switch, PS5, and PC via Steam, and it has a Fall 2025 release window.

Released divided up into two episodes in 2011 and 2012, respectively, the Trails in the Sky OVA was short-lived. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if even some dedicated The Legend of Heroes fans hadn’t heard of it. The Trails in the Sky OVA anime is an intriguing relic of the series’ past, one worth its own remake from scratch at some point.

With the recent surprise announcement of one of my favorite JRPGs receiving a remake with Trails in the Sky the 1st, it also feels like the right time to revisit the game’s OVA anime. Despite being well over a decade old at this point, the OVA’s two episodes feel like a lengthy and thrilling movie. The animation is surprisingly detailed and holds up quite well even now.

However, there are some issues if you look beneath the surface. For one, the Trails in the Sky OVA anime has a strange way of adapting the original games. It picks up its story essential with the second game, SC. The anime follows up after the first game’s surprising twist and adapts much of the second JRPG. But even then, it doesn’t do a complete job and leaves viewers hanging in the story.

The Trails in the Sky OVA anime has such a strange situation. It doesn’t start from the beginning nor does it even tell the whole story. In this way, it is highly inaccessible for newcomers. To make matters worse, it makes some awkward changes from the game’s original plot, switching around certain events and when they happen.

But perhaps the gravest error of them all with the OVA anime is its lack of access anywhere today. There is no way to legally stream this anime, so you have to resort to alternative means. It is a shame since they even went so far as to have an official English dub. Rather than make it more accessible today, though, I think a full Trails in the Sky OVA anime remake is necessary.

I have long thought The Legend of Heroes franchise would make for some excellent anime series. The story, world-building, and characters are more than enough to carry on their own without gameplay. It only makes the recent Northern War anime all the more frustrating. Rather than directly adapting Trails of Cold Steel, it opts for a side story set between the games.

Trails in the Sky the 1st

The animation is honestly sub-par for today’s standards and the storytelling is meh. In fact, it doesn’t even quite give fan-favorite characters like Rean and Altina the full attention they deserve. Nihon Falcom can fix this situation by starting over from scratch. What better way to do that than to see a full anime series adaptation of Trails in the Sky?

Doing this randomly out of nowhere would’ve felt somewhat awkward in recent years, but now is the perfect time. With the release of Trails in the Sky the 1st, this is the chance to give a true anime adaptation a try. This would open up the series to new audiences, reward long-term fans, and perhaps even further the growing success of the JRPG franchise.

The Zemuria Saga can’t go on forever. In fact, I presume the back-to-back, almost annual schedule of releases has to slow down at some point. One of the best ways to offset this potential shift would be with continuous anime adaptations of the different arcs. I just hope that Nihon Falcom uses this prime chance to give fans what they deserve: a true anime adaptation of Trails in the Sky and all other games.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st releases for Nintendo Switch in 2025.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st releases for Nintendo Switch in 2025.

trails in the sky nintendo

At a Japanese press event for Asian journalists to get the latest scoop on Kai no Kiseki: Farewell O Zemuria, Toshihiro Kondo discussed the Trails in the Sky the 1st remake and how it appeared at Nintendo Direct. According to Kondo, he wasn’t aware that Nintendo would reveal the game. [Thanks, GNN!]

Most of GNN’s article focuses on information for Kai no Kiseki, including characters, battle system, and the story. After introducing the game, Kondo noted that Kai no Kiseki serves as the climax for the overall narrative. So there will be a lot of surprises in the story. Afterwards, he explained why the Trails in the Sky 1st teaser trailer suddenly appeared at the Nintendo Direct rather than at a Trails-specific event. Apparently, Kondo didn’t know that Nintendo planned on holding a stream on that date, nor that it would choose to reveal Trails in the Sky the 1st then. If the announcement took anyone by surprise (like it did Mitsuki Saiga, Joshua's voice actress), it wasn't his intention.

Kondo also noted that with the remake, he wanted to highlight Estelle’s charm and cheeriness. So he wanted the remake to be a happy Trails game. He wants the remake to have a modern play style to invite newcomers to start the series while preserving what made the series enjoyable in the first place for returning ones. He ended it by reiterating that Nihon Falcom is 100% the company behind both the trailer and the game. This is due to suspicions from players, who seemed to think the quality of the trailer was too good for Nihon Falcom.

Kai no Kiseki: Farewell O Zemuria will come out for the PS4 and PS5 on September 26, 2024 for Japan and Asia.

Trails in the Sky Joshua Voice Actor Didn’t Know About Remake

The Japanese voice actor for Joshua Bright in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky shared on social media that she didn’t know about the newly announced remake. Mitsuki Saiga voiced Joshua in the Trails in the Sky FC Evolution port released in Japan on June 2015 for the PS Vita.

In a recent X (formerly Twitter) post made by the voice actor of Joshua, Mitsuki Saiga seems to have learned about the recently revealed Trails in the Sky the 1st remake at the same time as everyone else. The post itself is written in Japanese and it roughly translates to "It's Joshua! A full remake of Trails in the Sky is being made, huh? Wow...!” in English.

At the time of writing, it is unclear whether Nihon Falcom will reuse the voice acting for the PS Vita Evolution ports or if the studio will replace the Japanese voice cast with a different one. More information will appear in the future.  The Trails in the Sky remake was recently announced on August 27, 2024 as part of the latest Nintendo Direct partner showcase. Additionally, Nihon Falcom opened the official Japanese website for the remake project.

Mitsuki Saiga is also known for her roles as Morag in the Japanese dub of Xenoblade Chronicles 2, Bravely Default protagonist Tiz Arrior, Rossiu in the original Japanese dub of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, and Maria Ross in the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime adaptation.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st remake will come out on the Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Trails in the Sky the 1st

Despite rumblings in niche corners of the JRPG community, I didn't expect a full remake of Trails in the Sky. To be honest, I didn’t even think it needed more than a port. Well, now we've officially seen The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st.

I was wrong on both counts.

Pairing the story and atmosphere of The Sky Trilogy with Trails through Daybreak's incredible gameplay? (A game I awarded a perfect score to, by the way.) Yeah, I'd consider that a welcome combo. But beyond the thrill of updated mechanics, this remake could address a critical issue with the series. Accessibility.

Trails in the Sky is the starting point for the grand overarching story of the Trails series. The only way to play the game currently is on PC. While I’ve always praised it, even I can it it shows its age. This remake could open the game to an entirely new audience, making it more accessible and engaging than ever.

A huge question when a new player starts Trails is, "Where do I start?" I’ve long advocated for starting with Sky, despite other options. I am of the mind that you need the info and worldbuilding of Sky to process later information. However, for some people the game is just a little too old for them to get into.

There's also the matter of the games slow pace and sometimes repetitive gameplay loop. It's possible that this new Trails in the Sky remake will allow the developers to restructure some of the storytelling. Obviously without influencing the overall narrative, which should remain untouched.

This means that this game will be the definitive starting point for the trails series. And, it's welcome. The Trails in the Sky trilogy are among the best JRPGs ever made. However, it seems like many find reasons not to play them.

And I understand that, the series can feel very gatekeepy. That's something I don't ever want to come across. I love this series and want everyone to experience it. But, I also don't want people to play out of order and get spoiled. And I certainly don't want people to outright skip an incredible trilogy.

But, with the new remake there will no longer be any age on these titles. They'll be the freshest and the newest. Hopefully the slower story beats will be refined and streamlined. Also, the addition of voice acting while the originals lacked English voices will further give new players plenty to feel comfortable about.

So hopefully, when this game releases in 2025, it will end the debate on whether it's "Ok to skip Sky". Because now no one will even consider it.

trails in the sky remake

Falcom has updated its website to include the The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st remake, including information on the new sprites and such. So far, there’s nothing new that the trailer, which was in the Japanese Nintendo Direct, didn’t already cover.

As of the time of writing, you can check out the trailer, a brief summary of the story, screenshots from the remake, and a description of the battle system. Battle will commence after attacking an enemy symbol on the map and it’ll still use a turn-based system. The description states that the battle system is easy to grasp and even if you’re completely new to the RPG genre as a whole, you’ll be able to master it in almost no time. We saw a little bit of it during the trailer as well, which you can watch here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vmMaTcluNo

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky originally came out in 2004 for the Windows PC, though there was later a port onto the PSP. It’s the first game in the Trails series, which encomes other titles such as Trails from Zero and Trails of Cold Steel. The story follows Estelle Bright and her adopted brother Joshua Bright as they journey through Liberl in hopes of becoming Bracers. As a JRPG, the story becomes a lot grander in scale and the stakes become much higher as the story goes on.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st remake will come out on the Nintendo Switch in 2025.

Trails in the Sky the 1st Heading to Switch

During a montage in the Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase in August 2024, The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st for the Switch appeared. It has a 2025 release window.

The video segment highlighted in-game footage from this remake of the first Trails in the Sky game. We get to see Estelle Bright and her adopted brother Joshua in the first moments at their home, with her applauding his musical performance. From there, we see them actually going around town and taking part in Bracer missions. As this has “the 1st” in the title, it suggests that it will cover the first part of the story. The original story was told in three parts in Trails in the Sky, Trails in the Sky SC, and Trails in the Sky the 3rd

You can watch it in the showcase below:

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky first appeared on PCs in Japan in 2004, followed by a PSP release in 2006. We didn’t see it outside Japan until 2011, when it showed up on the PSP in English. In Japan, it also eventually appeared on the PS3 and Vita.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st will come to the Switch in 2025.
