The Switch 2 launch is a pretty good one for fans of JRPGs. Aside from being largely compatible with many of the Switch games we already own, meaning we get access to a large selection of existing titles, the launch library also contains six JRPGs so far. I mean, it could be more. We do have Summer Game Fest 2025 this month, and that could mean shadowdrops. To help you keep up, here’s all six of the JRPGs we know will be on the system as of June 4, 2025. (And I’ll be sure to keep it updated throughout the first few months of its “life.”)

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster 33t5t

Out of the entire Switch 2 lineup, Bravely Default HD Remaster is likely the first one you’ll think of when the JRPG genre comes to mind. This is because it is the most traditional new game that fits that formula. A remastered version of the classic 3DS game, it’s a turn-based adventure that is honestly very Final Fantasy due to its use of crystals and reliance on jobs for abilities. (It’s basically a successor to the DS game Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light.) Anyone playing it for the first time can look forward to a really interesting story!

Deltarune  q721m

Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4launch alongside the Switch 2, giving us the next part in the series to play when the new console debuts. Its turn-based battle system is very much like a JRPG. This means we can almost nearly complete the game, what with Chapter 5 being the final part. Even better is that you can test this out without paying first, as Chapters 1 and 2 are available for free.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time 4l1n3

Level-5 only announced Fantasy Life i would be a Switch 2 launch title at basically the last minute. But don’t take that as an indicator of the quality! This is an amazing game in which you take part in action-RPG battles and build up Lives (jobs) tied to combat, crafting, and gathering. The Switch 2 upgrade purchase gets you higher frame rates and better graphics. Go through three different time periods, build yourself up, do lots of crafting, and figure out what’s going on with a mystery that goes all the way back into the past as well as the present.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army 494lk

Atlus has us covered for the Switch 2 launch with the return of a classic action-RPG from its Shin Megami Tensei JRPG library. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is back just after the new console’s debut. We follow Raidou Kuzunoha XIV during the Taisho era as he solves the supernatural disappearance of a young woman with demons by his side. There are lots of quality of life adjustments in this release too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGq8brkpwwo&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma 5x2t2y

While there’s a little light platforming that can be an issue, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is actually a fantastic JRPG for the Switch 2. It isn’t as heavy on the farming as past installments, instead prioritizing fighting your way through different regions as you explore, help build up villages, and form relationships with different characters. This is all set against a storyline about awakening gods and saving a region from disaster. There’s even a $10 Switch 2 upgrade for it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m7YHLlDq40&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

While Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars did initially debut earlier in 2025, the compilation is also part of the Switch 2 launch window. This gives you the HD versions of two of the best JRPGs from the PlayStation era. It could easily keep you busy for 80 hours. It ran well on the original Switch, so it should be just as fantastic on the Switch 2 too.

Suikoden 1 and 2 Character Plush Return to Japan

Hobby Japan announced on social media that it will once again sell its six Suikoden 1 and 2 character plush toys. Pre-orders opened in Japan ahead of a September 2025 return. AmiAmi also confirmed that, while limited, it will take pre-orders for each of them. They cost ¥3,300 (~$23) each.

Each of these Suikoden dolls are about the standard size for these types of stuffed animals. They are 7 inches tall (18cm). Each one is a rendered in a chibi style designed to call to mind one of the leads from the series. They also arrived dressed in the outfits worn in the games, though these can’t be removed.

Here is the list of characters present, along with links to their AmiAmi pages:

While Luc does appear in multiple games, this toy is based on his appearance in the second installment.

These are the three Suikoden characters Tir, Gremio, and Ted:

Here are the three Suikoden 2 ones of Riou, Jowy, and Luc:

At the moment, AmiAmi does still ship worldwide, including to those of us in the US. A notice on its main page noted that it stopped offering surface mail () as a shipping option on April 9, 2025, as a result of tariffs inflicted by President Donald Trump. It’s important to keep an eye on storefronts now, due to the current trade war started by the president. As a result, stores such as Funstock and Good Smile Company announced measures like a pause in pre-orders or delayed shipments.

The Suikoden 1 and 2 character plush toys will debut again in Japan in September 2025. The Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars collection is available on the Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC worldwide.

Mukumuku and the player in Suikoden 2

With the recent release of the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster collection, it is now time to look ahead. Konami has an incredible catalogue of games and series. Unfortunately, not all of them are seeing the limelight as they deserve at this time. The Siliconera staff has come together to give our thoughts on the next Konami games that deserve a remake or remaster.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Next Konami Remake or Remaster 143l2t

Honestly, I'm just happy to see Suikoden 1 and 2 getting remakes. Otherwise you'd have either emulate or drop a few hundred on a dodgy ebay listing. Though, if they do well I'd love to see remasters of Suikoden 3 or maybe Tactics, or even just something new for the series. -- Elliot

I hope Suikoden I & II remakes will pave the way for a Suikoden V remake, as it’s a criminally underrated JRPG that deserves way more attention. I would even go as far as to say that Suikoden V is my favourite entry from the franchise. If I can be greedy and request another, I want to see Yu-Gi-Oh! True Duel Monsters: Sealed Memories get the remaster treatment. The title was created when the original card game had no established rules. As you can imagine, the game went in a very bonkers direction with some bizarre story plots. The game will probably never receive a remaster, especially as it’s been left out of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Early Days Collection, but it feels like an important (although unspoken) part of the franchise’s history, like the dramatic crossroads meme. Now, thinking about it, Yu-Gi-Oh has a weird lore, right? -- Yasmine

It is time for Dance Dance Revolution to come back in the West. It would work so well with the Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons (similar to Just Dance), but with music that is more appealing to me. Plus, it’d be a great way for me to lose a little bit of weight. Besides DDR, I’d love to see a Yu-Gi-Oh Early Days Collection 2 with a heavy focus on the DS titles. My favorite Yu-Gi-Oh games, still to this day, are the trio of World Championship games from 2009-2011 since they largely focused on my favorite series — 5D’s — and had excellent singleplayer story modes. -- Cody

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is available right now for Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Tir Meets With Leknaat in Suikoden HD Remaster Trailer

Ahead of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster debut on March 6, 2025, Konami shared a trailer teasing the fateful meeting between Tir McDohl and Leknaat at the outset of the original game. This segment is taken from the earliest moments of the first entry and shows their first meeting at which she provides the Scarlet Moon Empire predictions and senses his possible path. It appears alongside celebratory launch art from series character designer Junko Kawano.

First, here’s the scene in which Tir and Leknaat meet in Suikoden HD Remaster. It starts with him just entering to gather the predictions for Emperor Barbarossa, which she prepared for him.  She then explains that while she is an oracle and can see things to come, that the future can be changed. She then tells Tir that he’ll have a cross to bear moving forward and will need to make difficult choices to do what is right. She ends their meeting by saying that she hopes to see him, not because it is destined, but because she wants to.

https://twitter.com/GensoSuikoden/status/1897119883365859809

An English version of the trailer also appeared.

https://twitter.com/Suikoden/status/1897370868075950202

Leknaat and her apprentice Luc are major recurring characters in the Suikoden series, and both appear prominently in both Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster

The art from Junko Kawano also depicts a moment from the earliest hours of Suikoden HD Remaster. In it, we see Tir McDohl being taken by his father, General Teo, to meet Emperor Barbarossa and Court Mage Windy.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars will come to the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on March 6, 2025. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide. These two games also appeared together in a collection that only appeared on the PSP in Japan.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster might not have earth-shattering additions, but the graphical updates and quality of life adjustments make it a joy to return to these fantastic JRPGs games.

The Suikoden series went from a collection of games that fans of JRPGs revered to ones that ended up being acknowledged for their unique nature and often excellence by everyone. Unfortunately, it’s also been far too long since Konami acknowledge the IP with a new entry or revival or an old one. 2025 marks the return of the first two installments with Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars. While they might not be the biggest or most impressive remasters out there, they do a great job of restoring two deserving titles.

In a way, it’s quite fitting that both of these JRPGs are in this Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster, as these two games are so closely linked. So much so that the hero of the first and many of the ing cast returns for the sequel. All of the mainline games fit into the same timeline, and the second game takes place three years after the first. So we can see the effect of political events and decisions.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VIL88ZqQurQ

Suikoden follows Tir McDohl, a young man who is the son of Scarlet Moon Empire general Teo McDohl. The game begins with him being introduced to Emperor Barbarossa Rugner and ing his service as his father departs on a mission. However, on his very first mission, Tir gets a glimpse at the despicable behavior of the empire and finds himself inheriting the one of the 27 True Runes. This makes him a target for the army and a fugitive. As he escapes, he falls in with the Liberation Army. This leads to him ing and building it up by recruiting the 108 Stars of Destiny.

Similarly, Suikoden 2 follows Riou. He and his friend Jowy are a part of the Highland Kingdom’s Unicorn Youth Brigade. A possible peace is broken when Highland’s Prince Luca Blight works with the group’s commander to slaughter all to push a war with the City-States of Jowston. Riou and Jowy are able to escape. Both also find themselves caught up in a growing war, with Riou going on to lead and recruit for a rebel force hoping to bring peace to the region while stopping Blight.

Each of these games tends to follow a sort of pattern. At their hearts, both games in the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster collection are traditional, turn-based RPGs. Once you get to the point at which you become leader of an army and acquire a castle, you’ll be able to head out into the world to recruit people. These folks may have certain conditions you have to meet to get them to . In some cases, they might automatically as the story continues or not be ready to be part until either you hit a certain plot point or your castle expands after hitting a certain milestone. At other times, you may need to follow certain steps or achieve certain goals. I feel there will always come a point at which you sort of recognize that you’ve done everything you can do for the moment and need to return to the story, at which point you can get more people on your side.

Battles are fairly typical, turn-based affairs. You have a party of up to six, with three folks in front and three in back. (There are some anomaly characters that will take up two spots.) Weapons dictate proper placement, as they have certain ranges like short, medium, or long, and short-range ones must be in the front row. Magic is tied to Runes, with Rune shards being able to be tied to weapons and Orbs being set to people. As you use characters and perform magic different tiers of Rune abilities open up. There are also occasionally more strategic affairs, though those are infrequent and pop up at specific spots in the story.

I will say that while there are some elements you’d expect in a HD remaster, there are some features oddly absent or that aren’t exactly as helpful as you’d expect in these Suikoden games. There are three difficulty options to select at the start, which is handy! You can also dash right away, and that is incredibly helpful. When you enter battles, you can tap a button to increase the speed of the fight or turn autobattle on and off without going through the menu. It also naturally looks quite crisp and nice, what with being in HD, and the new character portraits are beautiful without feeling out of place. The conversation log is one of my favorite new additions, as I absolutely get caught up in the recruiting efforts. This means if you did a lot of backtracking, you might forget where you were supposed to meet up next. What do I do? I check the log and see where someone told me to go. I’m set.

However, there are areas in which I feel like Konami could have done more. There’s an autosave now, but it is incredibly infrequent. For example, it doesn’t kick in when you enter a town/dungeon, which would have been smart! Instead, it will happen at odd or notable times. For those aware of the series, it isn’t helpful for the Castle of Toran autosave to happen on the screen right when you enter the room where the save point before the boss is! An adjustment to modernize the save system and not tie it to inns would have been welcome as well. So would some controller rebinding options. It’s great we can dash right away! I do wish there’d been a toggle option for that in the options, so you don’t have to constantly hold the button down.

But the main goals here are that Suikoden 1 and 2 are back again, and this HD Remaster release revives both games in a comfortable way. It makes sure they look pretty and run well. I was especially shocked at how good both games looked, as the spritework really stands out without it feeling like some SNES games where you can see how the CRT effect benefited its appearance. I especially loved moments when there would be layered elements, like fog in a dungeon or clouds in a sky, because it’s executed so well. The new character portraits, which I mentioned earlier, are also quite a boon. It helps add more personality to these ing cast who could sometimes be quite personable even if they aren’t major players.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster might not have earth-shattering additions, but the graphical updates and quality of life adjustments that are here make it a joy to return to these fantastic JRPGs. Both games are a delight to play on the Switch. There’s a charm here that I longed for when I played Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes, and I’m delighted to think how much joy they’ll bring others. These are fantastic games, and I hope for further preservation efforts for other entries from Konami.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars will come to the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on March 6, 2025. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide. They also appeared together in a collection on the PSP in Japan.

Suikoden Special Program Will Discuss Games in March

Konami announced we’ll learn more about the Suikoden series and games in a Special Program on YouTube at 3pm PT/6pm ET on March 3, 2025. It debuts ahead of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars collection, which debuts worldwide on March 6, 2025.

The details about the showcase are incredibly vague. We basically only know when it will be. Konami didn’t even note if it will be focused on the remaster collection of the first two games or discuss other titles. It did mention “latest news,” so it is possible we could learn more about other mainline entries like Suikoden 3, 4, and 5 or perhaps even original and new ones.

While there hasn’t been such a possibly wide-reaching Suikoden series Special Program in quite some time, we did see some presentations about games recently. For example, a 2024 Tokyo Game Show one appeared on September 27, 2025, and that focused on Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster.

Leading up to that release, Konami’s shared brief tidbits about the two titles in it. It shared lore updates to prepare people for the political tensions in the region. Brief gameplay teasers appeared too, which shows how they look on the new platforms and the new character portraits

Suikoden HD Remaster Lore

Konami shared lore for the Suikoden games ahead of the release of Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. The lore, shared on social media, details the history of the Scarlet Moon Empire. This was the setting for the first game in the series, although it does make an appearance in the second game.

Konami has currently shared two posts about Scarlet Moon Empire lore. The first of these is a description of various locations players will be able to revisit in Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. These include Lake Toran and the capital of Gregminster. The post then takes us on a tour of Lenankamp, Mt Seifu and The Floating Fortress of Shasarazade. Finally, it references the Great Forest to the south and the desert that forms the border with the City States of Jowston. However, erroneously, the image accompanying this is a picture of Dunan from Suikoden II, not Toran from the first game.

A second post takes us through the history of the Scarlet Moon Empire leading up to the events of the first Suikoden. It mainly focuses on Emperor Barbarossa Rugner’s rise to power. It details the events of the War of Succession, which was triggered by Barbarossa being removed from the line of succession. The post is accompanied by art of Barbarossa raising a sword in victory.

These lore posts are the latest piece of information provided by Konami ahead of the release of the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster. Trailers for various characters are being released gradually. Currently, Flik and Odessa, Futch, Pilika and Neclord are some of the characters that have been showcased ahead of the collection's launch, with some of them appearing in multiple games.

Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars is set to release on March 6, 2025 for PS4, Xbox One, Switch and PC.

Suikoden HD New Footage Involves Meeting Flik and Odessa

Konami shared a new clip of the Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster introducing Flik, the Tenan Star in the first two games of the series, as well as the ally and lover of Odessa Silverberg, the leader of the Liberation Army.

The Japanese footage focuses on protagonist Tir McDohl meeting Flik for the first time in the resistance’s hideout located in Lenankamp during the events of the first game. Flik is a swordsman from the Warrior's Village, and is also known as “Blue Thunder Flik” for his skills as a swordsman and characteristic blue attire.

Flik introduces himself to McDohl with his nickname and asks if he’s heard of him. He then tells him that, if Odessa welcomes him to their hideout, so does he. He then introduces the swordsman Humphrey and Sanchez, two other of the Liberation Army and allies.

Flik introduces himself to McDohl with his nickname and asks if he’s heard of him. He then tells him that, if Odessa welcomes him to their hideout, so does he. He then introduces the swordsman Humphrey and Sanchez, two other of the Liberation Army and allies.

You can check out the footage of Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster introducing Flik here:

Other characters have been introduced leading up to the release of the game including Futch and his dragon Black in the first game, as well as Pilika and the Neclord in Suikoden 2.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars will come out on March 6, 2025 for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide, as well as in a PSP collection in Japan.

Futch and His Dragon Appear in Suikoden HD Remaster Video

Konami gradually started sharing new Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster footage ahead of its debut in March 2025, and the latest video clip features Futch and his dragon Black in the original game. This marks the first appearance of the hero, who remains a presence and Star of Destiny in the first three games in the series.

Basically, we get to see Futch grow up over the first three Suikoden games, and this Suikoden HD Remaster footage marks the first appearance of the character. We see Tir McDohl meet him and his dragon, Black, alongside allies like Ted. He’s a member of the Dragon Knights, and he’s assisting the party by helping them visit Leknaat at her island home. This gives us a chance to see his early character art, which shows him as a child.

The English social media also shared a photo and brief profile for him as well. We don’t know how his new character portrait for Suikoden 2 looks yet. Due to that happening years later, he’s in his teens by that point. He’s then almost 30 by the time he appears in Suikoden 3

The last time we saw footage, it involved another notable character. Konami highlighted Pilika and her role in Suikoden 2.

Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster is in development and the new PS4, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch release date is March 6, 2025. The original games appeared on the PlayStation worldwide, as well as in a PSP collection in Japan.

Looking ahead, 2025 appears to be a fantastic year for JRPGs. We already know about some great titles like Atelier Yumia. Plus, there are likely a few JRPGs we still don’t know about yet. Regardless, our staff put together our list of the JRPG titles that are our most anticipated for the year of 2025.

Siliconera Speaks Up: Most Anticipated JRPG of 2025 1j6e6y

Honestly? I'm excited to go through Suikoden I and II again. I loved the games, and playing Eiyuden Chronicle last year made me long for a chance to go through these two incredibly solid entries in the series again. I mean, I could just grab my PSX discs and pop them in, but playing on my Switch in handheld mode would be even more ideal. -- Jenni

Even with highly anticipated JRPGs already announced like Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake, my most anticipated JRPG as of right now is The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak II. Sure, I can’t wait for Trails in the Sky the 1st, which will remake one of my favorite JRPGs of all time, but I have already played that game. I will always want to try something new and Trails through Daybreak II is just that.

I loved Van and the other of his ragtag team in the first of the Calvard titles, plus the locations of the Republic were terrific to explore. However, the original felt just a tad too short and with a story that felt second to everything else, unlike past Trails games. I hope this sequel will fully live up to the potential of this story arc. Of course, this is with the current info we have right now, so I’m excluding unannounced JRPGs I hope we see in 2025 like a new NieR or Persona 6. -- Cody

My most anticipated JRPG for 2025 is also The Legend of Heroes, though I'm more interested in Trails in the Sky the 1st. Yes, I'm one of those people who played the original one back in the day and then dropped it because the battle system was a bit too slow for my taste. So I never actually got into the game, nor the series. It'll be nice to get into it for real (especially since I actually own a bunch of Trails games that I bought on sale, yet never even started them) and Trails in the Sky the 1st seems like the ultimate starting point. -- Stephanie

There’s new Suikoden 2 HD Remaster gameplay taken from Suikoden 1 and 2 HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars on social media, and it features Riou and Kasumi heading to the Rokkaku ninja village.
