Listen, there’s no excuse for not having played Monster Hunter Stories or Monster Hunter Stories 2 and caught Monsties now, as Capcom basically released the best version of one game everywhere and the sequel went multiplatform. These are refreshing takes on the Monster Hunter and Pokemon formula. They’re worth playing. (Especially if you have Apple Arcade and free access to the original via the subscription.) So in case you are just getting started, here are our recommendations for Monsties to check out.

There is a correct answer to this question and it IS the Great Poogie. Runners up include my chubby shark friend Zamtrios and the Good Old Rathian.  I hope they add a Seltas Queen you can tame one day too, I love that design. — Elliot

I really love Nargacuga, because it's just one of the cutest, strongest, and most intimidating Monsties in the Monster Hunter Stories games. However, I also kept Paolumu along as a friend for the longest time. It's so fluffy, puffy, and cute! But really, the execution is such that any monster you invest in can end up being viable for so long, which helps keep both entries in this new series engaging. I just hope that, if a third game appears, even more monsters get a chance to become our buddies. (They are friend-shaped sometimes, after all!) — Jenni

Review: Monster Hunter Stories Feels Even More Like an Anime

Monster Hunter Stories 2 is an amazing game. So much so that it might be people’s first exposure to the spin-off series! Capcom’s attempting to rectify that while also bringing up its start with a Monster Hunter Stories remaster that is a definitive edition with everything anyone worldwide could want. While elements of it mean it can feel better suited for a younger audience and it isn’t as rich as the original title, the adjustments and additions make it feel even more like an anime romp. (Though watching the Monster Hunter Stories: Ride On anime based on it on Crunchyroll is still an option too!)

In a world filled with people who hunt monsters, you and your childhood friends Cheval and Lilia grew up in the blissful Hakum Village seeing them as Monstie friends. The dream was to become Riders, those who fought alongside Monsties like partners for the good of your village. The three of you even managed to befriend a newly-hatched Rathalos before becoming Riders! However, after the Black Blight caused a Nargacuga to become corrupted and go on a rampage at the village, killing Cheval’s mom and causing the Rathalos to disappear in the process, everything changed. Years later, Lilia’s following her own path, Cheval’s struck out on a course of revenge, and you’re left to become a Rider, face the Black Blight, and maybe save the world in the process.

Clearly, it’s the sort of tale you’d find in any anime or manga geared toward kids searching for an action-packed coming of age story of friendship and redemption!

There’s a set sort of gameplay loop for each area in Monster Hunter Stories. You’ll roam around fairly contained locations, facing monsters while fighting alongside ones you’ve tamed. Resources can be gathered, either for crafting or quests. Monster Dens can be explored to get eggs for fresh Monstie allies. As you complete major quests with your most appropriate Monsties, you’ll get opportunities to explore more, deal with the Black Blight contagion, and befriend more creatures.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8T7JMD7kUj4&ab_channel=MonsterHunter

Battles are all turn-based, with the player avatar and one monster out at all times. The attack type triangle means using power, speed, and technique moves in a rock-paper-scissor fashion to best opponents. Ones that retreat may lead you to a den with their eggs. You might also break off parts, based on the fight. Fights against other Riders means your Monstie only attacks the other human, while you attack their monster, all until one of the two sides’ three hearts drops to zero first. It’s all a very anime, or even anime RPG, approach.

Part of the increased anime feel stems from Monster Hunter Stories being fully voiced. I went with the English voice acting, as it was shockingly solid. It really adds to the immersion and makes the whole experience feel more fleshed out. The game always had this vibrant essence with a plotline that wouldn’t be out of place in Shonen Jump, so now it just feels more appropriate and in line with those tales.

This also pairs well with the crisper visuals. While some of the textures for environments don’t feel like they held up as well with the update, the character and monster models in Monster Hunter Stories look so vivid. They feel a bit more alive, with the occasional exaggerated features really adding to the personalities of every person and creature you encounter.

The inclusion of Museum Mode in the Monster Hunter Stories remaster adds to it as well. It’s like looking through an art book for your favorite anime, especially in the characters and monsters sections. Both of them really show how certain features of existing characters were adjusted to make them fit into this world. Likewise, you can better see the consistency across the designs for different people to make certain characteristic pop, affiliations evident, and natures come through in expressions.

It’s also great to see how Monster Hunter Stories really acts as a director’s cut of sorts in the remaster. This is because this version included some of the past Japanese updates that weren’t present worldwide. Extra monsters are great, and I was really happy about Kushala Daora. The Tower of Illusion does seem to help with replay too. And yes, in the Switch version the original Japanese 3DS amiibo still work.

However, the downside to the Monster Hunter Stories remaster is that it is coming after the stellar sequel. The story felt as thought it was stronger and had more widespread appeal, andthis original outing does still feel like it skews toward a much younger audience. Especially with the constant handholding throughout the entire first region in the game. Enemy encounters still don’t feel as satisfying, and messing with genes via Stimulants isn’t as fun or prevalent as in the sequel. Locations also feel smaller. There is definite value in playing the first game! We can see the foundation that was forged here and it’s novel for its cartoonish nature. I’d just recommend taking some breathing room and not going from the sequel to the original, or you may feel disappointed.

Monster Hunter Stories remains a vibrant anime romp through a world that fuses Monster Hunter elements with Pokemon-esque creature collection and training. It can feel a bit dated compared to the sequel, and the direction may make it more welcome to younger gamers. However, it’s a colorful, entertaining romp and this iteration feels like the definitive release.

The Monster Hunter Stories remaster is available on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC. Other versions of the game can be found on the 3DS and iOS devices via Apple Arcade.

Interview: Preparing Monster Hunter Stories 1 and 2 for New Platforms

It’s a big year for Monster Hunter as a series, as we’ve not only started to see more Monster Hunter Wilds news, but both Monster Hunter Stories and Monster Hunter Stories 2 are heading to more platforms. To learn more about the latest remaster and port, Siliconera got a chance to talk with Producer Yoshihiro Akira and Art Director Takahiro Kawano about the games getting a new chance at fresh audiences.

Jenni Lada: Monster Hunter Stories is about eight years old now. What sorts of challenges did that pose when preparing it for the Switch, PS4, and PC?

Yoshihiro Akira: Because Monster Hunter Stories was an older title, it took a lot of effort to bring it to current platforms. Programmers had to decipher the source code to develop the game. The biggest problem we faced was the interface. The Nintendo 3DS version had two screens, including a touch screen, and even the mobile version was designed for touch controls. We have rebuilt the controls based on the interface of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin so that Monster Hunter Stories can be played comfortably on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Steam.

In addition, in order to allow players who have played the game in the past to enjoy it again, we created a fully voiced version of the game to deepen immersion in the scenario, which was well received, and a Museum mode containing design artwork to help s fall in love with the series even more.

It was already confirmed that Title Update 1.20 and 1.30 will be included in the Monster Hunter Stories Switch, PS4, and PC versions. Will any other quality of life features inspired by the sequel appear in the game?

Akira: The interface was rebuilt based on the controls of Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin. In addition, we have incorporated features to make it easier to play based on our experience with Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, such as gathering materials while riding your monstie and the Quick Heal.

How deep into the archives did you go to prepare its Museum Mode, and which piece of insight into its development are you most excited to have preserved for people to see?

Akira: Fortunately, the archives were well organized and preserved at the time, so it made things a lot easier. If you visit the Museum after playing the story, you will have a better understanding of the character design ideas that sadly did not make it into the game and the images that were created to design the maps, allowing s to enjoy the Museum mode even more.

In particular, the map images will give you a better understanding of the many wonderful designs that were used to create the world of Monster Hunter Stories. Please also take a look at the comments made by the staff at that time!

How will the amiibo-exclusive monsters be handled for the Monster Hunter Stories remaster, given the amiibo for the 3DS game never appeared outside Japan?

Akira: The amiibo functions will be carried over as is. The Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin amiibo can also be used to acquire content. What you can get though....you will have to wait and see!

Likewise, how will the Monster Hunter Stories 2 amiibo bonuses be handled on the PS4?

Akira: It is not possible to obtain this with the PlayStation 4 version.

Image via Capcom

Which monster design for Monster Hunter Stories and its sequel are you most proud of? Likewise, which Monstie do you wish you could have included in the series?

Takahiro Kawano: The Monster Hunter Stories series features monsters from the Monster Hunter franchise, and while we rarely design new monsters, we did create original monsters for the final bosses of both games. I can't go into detail about this due to spoilers, but please check them out for yourself! A monster I’d like to introduce to the series would be a very large monster like Lao-Shan Lung. It would be difficult to incorporate it into an RPG style game, but I’m sure it would be fun if we could make it happen.

What would you like to potentially do in, say, a Monster Hunter Stories 3 if given the chance to make it?

Akira: I think the core being a Monster Hunter title that is easy to play for those who are not good at action games and those who like turn-based RPGs will remain the same. It would be nice to be able to evolve the series in such a way that we can keep the strong elements and change things that need to be changed.

The Monster Hunter Stories remaster will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC on June 14, 2024. It is also available on the 3DS and mobile devices. Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin releases on the PS4 on June 14, 2024, and it is available now on the Switch and PC.

Preview: Monster Hunter Stories Remaster Still Feels Accessible

Brace yourself, because I might make you feel old. Monster Hunter Stories turns eight this year, ahead of the Switch, PS4, and PC remaster. A lot’s happened since then, like mobile ports and a sequel. After going through the introduction, it still feels like a fresh spin-off that involved Capcom taking a chance to try new things.

For those who missed it the first time around or the sequel, the world of Monster Hunter Stories involves people people who are riders. They take monster eggs from nests, go through hatching ceremonies to bond with the creatures, then right and fight alongside them as trusted friends. This first installment involves a young rider who is just coming of age and taking their first steps in the role, while also dealing with a world-threatening plight affecting monsters called the Black Blight.

In these earliest moments, the main thing I noticed is how much fresher Monster Hunter Stories looked with this remaster. Capcom always ensured it was a bright, colorful game that managed to make certain monsters seem cuter than their traditional forms. It’s very much an anime-style romp, giving us a chance to live Pokemon-like dreams with elder dragon beings that would normally crush us and pick their teeth with our bones. Things are especially crisp and seemed even more vivid now, with the early textures, areas, and characters rendered well.

I also began to better appreciate just how cartoonish this original Monster Hunter Stories is. It relies so heavily upon the same sorts of story beats and character backgrounds as popular anime series geared towards kids. Combined with the even more vibrant world, it feels even more like a cartoon itself. It’s a good thing, especially since from my past encounter with it I recall it getting more complex. The inclusion of full voice acting, including dual audio, helps with that immersion.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5rgFruN1bg

As with the actual gameplay experience, I didn’t get to spend as much time going through the Museum Mode for the Monster Hunter Stories remaster yet. However, what I have see helps show exactly how true-to-life the actual game is compared to the original concept art and designs. I mainly looked at some of the character designs, but seeing the progression and reading the developers’ thoughts seems as insightful as ever.

Even after just returning to Monster Hunter Stories, the remaster is starting to make me appreciate this spin-off series even more.It really dared to do something different. Getting to check development art and re-experience it makes me appreciate what Capcom started.

The Monster Hunter Stories remaster will come to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC on June 14, 2024. It is also available on the 3DS and mobile devices.

See Nargacuga in Monster Hunter Stories

Now that Monster Hunter Stories HD release is on the way, Capcom is reintroducing some of the monsters appearing as Monsties like Nargacuga. Two videos show what to expect when finding or exploring alongside the character.

First, there’s a teaser showing what it is like when a Nargacuga Monstie hatches from an egg in Monster Hunter Stories. This can also help a player with identifying the character. The egg shown has a pink and purple tiger-print pattern. A standard Nargacuga hatches from that egg. (A Green Nargacuga also appears in this title.)

https://twitter.com/monsterhunter/status/1785293296505418201

The other video shows the Nargacuga Ride Action in Monster Hunter Stories. When you ride on it, you can temporarily become invisible. This allows you to sneak past other monsters in the field and avoid battles. The standard and green Nargacuga Monsties are the only ones with this ability in the original release.

As a reminder, this isn't the only Monster Hunter Stories game to feature this character. It also appeared in the sequel. That one added the standard, green, and Silverwind versions of the monster.

Monster Hunter Stories will come to the PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam on June 14, 2024. It is also available on the 3DS and mobile devices.
