The God Eater series holds a special place in my gaming memories. As one of the more established competitors to Monster Hunter, Bandai Namco gave a more extensive focus on the characters. It also let players bring NPCs as party even in single-player sessions, which did not appear as a feature in Capcom's games prior to the 2022 release of Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. However, the God Eater games released on the PSP, PS Vita, and PS4 also had a trick that allowed players to characters from the same 's saved slots as avatar NPC companions.

To put the trick into perspective, we should first learn how the avatar NPC feature came to be in a genre that thrived with multiple competitor titles around the 2010s. The Monster Hunter games have a Guild Card that records each player's activities. Players can also customize the card before sharing it with others by writing their own messages while choosing a specific pose and title. However, the cards barely serve any gameplay purposes other than recording proof that you have encountered those players in a multiplayer session.

This was where Bandai Namco tried to amp up the competition by adding a meaningful gameplay feature to the cards. In the God Eater games, exchanging these cards would not only let players see each other's records; it also actually let them select the player's avatar as an NPC party member akin to the in-game story characters.

Some of the games' players have even discovered a trick where they can characters from other save slots in the same as avatar NPC companions, which also means they can technically add their own created characters as party . Such a trick has since been known in the community as the "Self Avatar Card."

The trick was made possible by utilizing loopholes in the wireless and online features of the now-legacy consoles, although one would be required to own two copies of the same game and/or console to pull it out. While methods to execute the trick had existed as early as the release of God Eater Burst—the enhanced edition of the first series entry released for PSP in 2010, I had the most profound experiences with God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst when Bandai Namco released them for the Vita and PS4.

There were two methods possible to execute the trick in both games. The first one utilized two Vita consoles—one of them could also be a PlayStation Vita TV. And if one had purchased the game digitally, they could and access the same game on both consoles and then connect with the local Ad-Hoc mode.

The second method—and the one I actually used—involved purchasing a copy of the game for each of the PS4 and Vita. I still how I could connect to a private online room with the same simultaneously on both platforms. After successfully performing the internal exchange, I could sync the saves with the updated Self Avatar Cards via the cross-save feature. In God Eater Resurrection, that also meant I could add the franchise's anime protagonist Lenka Utsugi besides my own characters to the list of callable allies.

God Eater was not the only series in the hunting action genre to feature the Self Avatar Card trick. When Koei Tecmo launched Toukiden Kiwami around 2014-2015 and Toukiden 2 in 2016, it released both games on the PS4 and Vita. I still fondly how I could pull out the same method and have my characters appear in each other's saves.

God Eater 3, unfortunately, does not the same trick due to the lack of cross-play and cross-save between its PS4, PC, and Switch releases. Technically speaking, players of the Switch and Steam versions could have a similar experience of exchanging avatars between two respective devices. However, both platforms have more stringent checks so it would necessitate a secondary . And while there is a way on the Switch to access a single digital copy on two consoles and s, both consoles can only connect via online multiplayer, which also requires a Nintendo Switch Online subscription for each of them.

The experience of having another self-made avatar as an NPC companion in these character-driven hunting games is different from the likes of Freedom Wars' Accessory androids or Dragon's Dogma's Pawns. In the latter games, you could create the secondary avatar right away, but they are more designed to be emotionless servants to your primary character.

The avatar NPCs can appear as callable characters with a more complete personality that can even become indistinguishable from the existing story characters if they are created elaborately enough. I actually felt more motivated to replay God Eater and Toukiden games with secondary and tertiary avatars when I had my previous character(s) appear to help me in the new playthrough.

However, looking at how stringent the check has become in more recent platforms, it becomes more crucial that generating self-made NPCs should not be the result of a cross-play trick, but rather should be implemented as an official gameplay feature. Having such a feature can help give more motivation to players who want to get immersed into the game's world but prefer playing in single-player modes, such as myself.

But I am personally hoping that the self-made avatar NPC feature can appear formally in not only a hypothetical God Eater 4 by Bandai Namco or Toukiden 3 by Koei Tecmo but also all other hunting action games, including Capcom's Monster Hunter Wilds which is starting to go all-in on NPC hunters. Imagine replaying the latter game with a newer character and you spot your first avatar coming to help after you launched the SOS Flare... How cool would that be?

The God Eater series place people in dire situations. We’re creating an avatar who’s doing his or her best to survive in a world that’s constantly close to the end, and it’s all due to the Aragami attempting to take out the rest of humanity. We’re doing our best to save the day, but the nature of such games means success could be bittersweet. Fortunately, God Eater 2: Rage Burst takes a cue from God Eater Resurrection. Yes, it offers more missions to enjoy, monsters to hunt, and equipment to make, but the real bonus is the opportunity to add an epilogue onto the story that parallels the previous installment.

Note: There will be spoilers for both God Eater 2 and God Eater 2: Rage Burst from here on out.

god eater 2 rb julius

Thematically, God Eater 2 is very similar to God Eater. In each game, we have a superior that we trust who’s going to betray the organization in a quest for power. This involves using and abusing someone we’ve grown to know, love, and trust throughout the course of the game. In God Eater 2, our villain is Dr. Rachel Claudius, Blood’s founder, and Julius Visconti, her adopted son and Blood’s first member and leader. We work with both of them throughout the game. Rachel was involved in an accident at the hands of her sister, Leah, and was injected with the P73 Bias Factor to revive her.

Like God Eater Resurrection’s Johannes von Shicksal, Rachel developed a desire to  devour the world as a result of her sudden Aragami tendencies. Like Johannes needed Shio’s Singularity to accomplish his goal, Rachel needs to use Julius to create another true Singularity that will devour the world. Thanks to Yuno, who also is a Singularity, our avatar is able to reach Julius, despite his transformed and monstrous state. Julius then sacrifices himself, just like Shio did, to contain the singularity in the Spiral Tree. He also gets rid of Rachel’s manufactured Black Rain and its plague in the process.

god eater 2 rb rachel

This means God Eater 2: Rage Burst’s expansion content kicks off in a place similar to the after-the-end Burst content in God Eater Resurrection. Our team is picking up the pieces after a distressing event. Even though world is no longer in danger of being devoured, it isn’t exactly safe either. In each game, we end up learning that someone we loved and thought we’d lost may not be entirely gone. Julius is in a situation similar to Lindow’s. We think he’s gone, but his consciousness and body are still trapped inside the tree.

There’s even a new character who helps in the the quest to find our missing teammate, all because of a special connection. In God Eater Resurrection, this new ally is Ren. He’s connected to Lindow by his God Arc, as he actually is a manifestation of the weapon. God Eater 2: Rage Burst introduces us to Livie Collete, a young woman who can adapt her Bias Factor to use other people’s God Arcs. When she uses Julius’, she has a vision of him. It’s because of this connection, which is similarly supernatural, that we find our new purpose.

god eater 2 rb livie

God Eater 2: Rage Burst’s new final boss’ existence even feels like a God Eater Resurrection deja vu. In the previous game, some Nova fragments had escaped containment and been reborn as Arius Nova. Similarly, Rachel’s existence still remains in the Spiral Tree and is awoken when people attempt to enter it. She ends up turning into the World Closer, a being just as powerful as Arius Nova. It has the same world-destroying potential.

Even the conclusion of this new arc ends in the same hopeful way as God Eater Resurrection. Just like Lindow, Julius is saved. He returns to Blood, just as Lindow came back to the Fenrir Far East Branch and Cradle. In a world where we’re constantly saying goodbye to people, we get a chance to bring two of our familiar faces home. The stories end with us bringing back the people who originally helped teach us what we knew. It’s a whole “student sures the teacher” thing.

Which helps make God Eater 2: Rage Burst so satisfying. Yes, we’re basically following a plotline very similar to the one in God Eater Resurrection. We’re restoring the people who helped our avatars become who they are, finishing off the ultimate evil that could still have threatened the world, and getting closure. But, that doesn’t make it any less interesting. I think it’s reassuring to show that there’s still hope in such a scary situation and someone who seems long gone can still be saved.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst is now available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160907214157

Games that fall into the same category as God Eater 2: Rage Burst all try to give people some element of choice. When you create a character, you’re given a range of hairstyles, colors, voices, and other options to set yourself apart. And of course many of these games have crafting systems, so you can put together and earn your own weapons and armor. But with God Eater 2: Rage Burst, there are these additional customization options that help make the game even better. Your own efforts are always making your experience better.

The crafting menu in God Eater 2: Rage Burst is quite detailed. Creating new equipment is a good start. Weapons and their upgrades will show up in the list as you unlock new missions and collect items. These can be crafted when you have gathered the appropriate items from Aragami. Taking on some of the early Hard Missions is a good way to stock up in the first few hours! These typically don’t have more challenging monsters, instead offering greater numbers of them in the field. Going through with a full team will let you swiftly accrue materials of all kinds, even rarer ones. These can then be used for new weapons or the parts needed for weapon upgrades.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160907213427

It’s important to make good use of Devour combos to collect these materials. Fortunately, they’re to pull off. When using one of God Eater 2: Rage Burst’s melee weapons, repeatedly press the square button, before pressing the right trigger and triangle at once for a quick devour. Doing so while an Aragami is alive will give you a bullet, and again immediately after it falls will provide materials. Between these and the material crafting menu, which allows you to pay a fee to turn tickets and accrued, common items into the things you need, it’s possible to build the arsenal and wardrobe you expect from a hunting RPG such as this. And it’s all happening because you’re efficient.

Of course there is the bullet creating system. It’s one of the God Eater series’ most notable and complicated systems. People can build their own bullets, adding attributes and effects to them to adjust the damage and symptoms they can inflict on enemies. You can spend hours of experimenting and testing to build the bullets that will make a difference. (Though, ittedly, I prefer to rely on other people’s wisdom.) Regardless, effort is being put in by somebody. Which means you can put together a loadout in God Eater 2: Rage Burst that is as impressive as the one you’d find in any equivalent game.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160907205434

What people might appreciate most is all the ways the skills tied to characters and weapons can also be adjusted and improved. The ability to rebuild and install skills can make as big a different going into more dangerous missions as making sure you have created the best weapons possible at the moment. After each mission, you’ll acquire abandoned God Arcs. These can be combined to first rebuild a skill for a particular kind of weapon. Once you have them, you can install skills on the weapons you like best. Perhaps the best part of this means no two weapons will be the same, as you can cater them to your build. This all only happens when you take the time to go out there and tackle missions, perhaps repeatedly, in hopes of getting pieces that work for you.

The Personal Ability system is another means of creating a party that fits your needs. When beating a mission, you earn GAP the first time you beat standard missions or on some special missions. Each mission participant also earns AP after a mission. You expend both on Personal Abilities for people you’re taking with you to hunt Aragami, again letting you build the exact team you want. Julius arrives fully decked out with great skills, but you get to gradually accumulate others. For example, I’ve always had Nana and Gilbert learn varying levels of Venom Hits and Bind Hits to increase the odds of the skills triggering, while also making sure Nana has ive skills and Gilbert has offensive ones. By working with your crew, they grow into the people you need.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160907212725

Even the Blood Arts system has you working toward being a better, more unique God Eater. God Eater 2: Rage Burst’s Blood Arts system basically assigns a weapon tree to weapons. The more you fight, the more likely you are to learn Blood Art skills that you can equip and use once per battle. Except, it isn’t as simple as earning experience points from each fight, as you might in other RPGs. The Blood Arts are tied to specific actions and attacks, and will only have a chance of Awakening after you’ve used them a specific number of times. Which is a more realistic system. You’re earning these abilities through practical applications.

Every step of the way, God Eater 2: Rage Burst is letting you work your way to the God Eater you want to be. You’re getting the chance to not only build your melee weapon and gun, asg the skills, bullets, and attributes you might want, but also creating the skills you’ll need, working with your fellow teammates to build up their abilities, and awakening your Blood Arts. It’s a very customizable action RPG, but in a way that makes you feel a sense of satisfaction from legitimately acquiring everything.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst is available for the PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita, and PC.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160904001038

With God Eater Resurrection, the updated version of God Eater Burst, 2050’s Earth was established. We learned that Aragami had come to Earth, nearly wiped out humanity, and the Fenrir Organization had recruited soldiers and armed them with God Arcs to fight them. While God Eater 2: Rage Burst has players’ hero or heroine attempting to save the world in a similar way, it is in many ways a far more focused adventure.

God Eater 2: Rage Burst takes place three years after God Eater Resurrection and stars a whole new group of God Eaters. Instead of the second generation, which we met previous and saw were capable of rather standard fighting, it focuses on a group of warriors with new, more intensive features. The of Blood have an additional drive and innate ability that allows them to use Blood Arts. While they may not be as experienced as characters like Lindow and Soma, their Blood Power lets them utilize special powers known as Blood Arts and protects them from Invasive Aragami’s Pulsating abilities.

The Blood Arts replace God Eater Resurrection’s Predator Styles. While the previous game’s abilities gave you a set skill with specific bonuses and effects when using a devour option, the Blood Arts focus on advancing and upgrading specific abilities through repeated use. When you check your Loadout at a Terminal, you can investigate the Blood Arts you’ve earned so far. Meeting certain objectives lets you earn new skills and improve them.

GOD EATER 2 RAGE BURST_20160904003556

God Eater 2: Rage Burst also gives us a chance to see God Eater Resurrection’s characters evolve. People like Soma, Lindow, Kota, Alisa, Erina, and Kanon all return. Like our of Blood, they’re part of Cradle and search the world looking for possible Satellite home locations, fighting Aragami, and conducting research. While some characters are only referenced and don’t actually appear, like Sakuya, we see how each has stepped up and grown in the organization. We watch as they too develop the same Blood Art abilities as the founding of Blood. It allows for more definition.

Though, the best and clearest example of God Eater 2: Rage Burst narrowing in a way God Eater Resurrection didn’t is its character episodes. These sub-stories look closer at characters who can your party, occasionally changing their abilities in a fight, adding new Blood Arts, new Personal Abilities, and sometimes even new items. They always offer more information about the person in question, sometimes giving silly information about something like a favorite food, and occasionally letting you know secrets about people’s pasts. The first few, with Ciel, Emil, Erina, and Kota, appear after clearing the Rank 3 second story mission, with more following after regular story mission and rank mission updates. Of course, even more follow once you get into the Rage Burst expansion content.

With God Eater 2: Rage Burst, you’re getting the sort of action and adventure you expect from a God Eater game. It’s filled with Aragami to hunt, life-threatening threats to address, and characters to connect with. The difference is, this time you feel like you’re focusing in more on your characters’ abilities and personalities than you did in God Eater Resurrection. I felt like I was learning more about specific people and groups, rather than Fenrir, God Eaters, and Aragami as a whole. The sequel has the luxury of going deeper than the original, since we already have some familiarity with all parts, and takes full advantage of that with elements like Blood Arts and Character Episodes.

For the first time, North America and Europe will be getting entries in Bandai Namco’s God Eater series, a franchise similar to Monster Hunter. To celebrate and prepare people for the God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst, the company will be releasing a series of developer diaries. The first stars Yusuke Tomizawa and Hiroshi Yoshimura, the producer and director, respectively, of the God Eater series.

The first God Eater developer diary begins with animated footage from both God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst. Tomizawa then reminds people that the worldwide release of both games is coming following the series’ fifth anniversary. Both Tomizawa and Yoshimura express happiness at the English release. Yoshimura also expressed nervousness at fans’ reactions. Links to the Facebook and Twitter s were offered, since both men reiterated how important players’ input is to the series. The video closes with Tomizawa saying they hope they can do more developer diary videos, with future ones talking about “new things even Japanese players do not know about.”

North American and European PlayStation 4s, PlayStation Vitas, and Windows PCs will see God Eater Resurrection and God Eater 2: Rage Burst in summer 2016.
