Ahead of the debut of Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster, Square Enix shared looks into the past lives of Agnes Oblige and Edea Lee. Each one highlights what they were doing just ahead of the events of the game, which debuts on the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. It also offers glimpses at other people we see throughout the game.

The first image involved a peek at Agnes before she headed out on her mission for the Crystal Orthodoxy in Bravely Default. She’s the Wind Vestal devoted to that elemental crystal. As shown in her prequel art and story, she’s working alongside another nun from the Temple of Wind to teach people in Ancheim about the importance of crystals.

The Bravely Default second image showed Edea Lee at the Duchy of Eternia back when she fought alongside the Sky Knights. This is before we meet and up with her in the game following her mission to intercept Agnes. In the background we can see her father Braev Lee, Grand Marshall of the Council of Six, watching as she walks alongside Alternis Dim, another member of the order.

Here’s how both images look. Each one features a brief story segment below it.

As a reminder, this is one of multiple JRPGs that are part of the Switch 2 launch window, with all of them being familiar faces.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster will come to the Switch 2 on June 5, 2025, and the original game appeared on the 3DS.

Best Switch 2 Launch Window JRPGs to Play

The Switch 2 launch is a pretty good one for fans of JRPGs. Aside from being largely compatible with many of the Switch games we already own, meaning we get access to a large selection of existing titles, the launch library also contains six JRPGs so far. I mean, it could be more. We do have Summer Game Fest 2025 this month, and that could mean shadowdrops. To help you keep up, here’s all six of the JRPGs we know will be on the system as of June 4, 2025. (And I’ll be sure to keep it updated throughout the first few months of its “life.”)

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster 33t5t

Out of the entire Switch 2 lineup, Bravely Default HD Remaster is likely the first one you’ll think of when the JRPG genre comes to mind. This is because it is the most traditional new game that fits that formula. A remastered version of the classic 3DS game, it’s a turn-based adventure that is honestly very Final Fantasy due to its use of crystals and reliance on jobs for abilities. (It’s basically a successor to the DS game Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light.) Anyone playing it for the first time can look forward to a really interesting story!

Deltarune  q721m

Deltarune Chapters 3 and 4launch alongside the Switch 2, giving us the next part in the series to play when the new console debuts. Its turn-based battle system is very much like a JRPG. This means we can almost nearly complete the game, what with Chapter 5 being the final part. Even better is that you can test this out without paying first, as Chapters 1 and 2 are available for free.

Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time 4l1n3

Level-5 only announced Fantasy Life i would be a Switch 2 launch title at basically the last minute. But don’t take that as an indicator of the quality! This is an amazing game in which you take part in action-RPG battles and build up Lives (jobs) tied to combat, crafting, and gathering. The Switch 2 upgrade purchase gets you higher frame rates and better graphics. Go through three different time periods, build yourself up, do lots of crafting, and figure out what’s going on with a mystery that goes all the way back into the past as well as the present.

Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army 494lk

Atlus has us covered for the Switch 2 launch with the return of a classic action-RPG from its Shin Megami Tensei JRPG library. Raidou Remastered: The Mystery of the Soulless Army is back just after the new console’s debut. We follow Raidou Kuzunoha XIV during the Taisho era as he solves the supernatural disappearance of a young woman with demons by his side. There are lots of quality of life adjustments in this release too!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGq8brkpwwo&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma 5x2t2y

While there’s a little light platforming that can be an issue, Rune Factory: Guardians of Azuma is actually a fantastic JRPG for the Switch 2. It isn’t as heavy on the farming as past installments, instead prioritizing fighting your way through different regions as you explore, help build up villages, and form relationships with different characters. This is all set against a storyline about awakening gods and saving a region from disaster. There’s even a $10 Switch 2 upgrade for it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4m7YHLlDq40&ab_channel=NintendoofAmerica

While Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars did initially debut earlier in 2025, the compilation is also part of the Switch 2 launch window. This gives you the HD versions of two of the best JRPGs from the PlayStation era. It could easily keep you busy for 80 hours. It ran well on the original Switch, so it should be just as fantastic on the Switch 2 too.

Bravely Default HD Remaster Minigames Unlock D’s Journal Notes

Square Enix shared more details about Bravely Default HD Remaster, and among the new screenshots and confirmations of quality of life features are insights into the two minigames and their D’s Journal notes. These are called Luxencheer Rhythm Catch and Ringabel’s Panic Cruise, and there are two screenshots showing them off. Also, as the box art for the game confirmed, this is a game-key card physical copy that still requires you to the JRPG.

Luxencheer Rhythm Catch, as the name describes, is a rhythm game. The initial screenshot for it shows Agnes performing, and she is singling Praline a la Mode’s “Love in the Crossfire.” It seems to show indicators that look like the sorts of lightsticks you’d see at idol shows. The screenshot also shows this is a hard version of the song being performed, and there seems to be a score threshold to hit to clear it.

Meanwhile, Ringabel’s Panic Cruise is a first-person perspective of flying through the sky in an airship. The screenshots shows a number of circles to fly through, with players at the help and able to touch controls. Edea is on the side offering commentary. Also, the song playing during this minigame is "The Grandship Soars the Open Skies.”

Here’s how the two screenshots for the minigame look. Square Enix noted the D's Journal entries unlocked by playing them are entirely new and offer new insights and lore. (Notes in it also unlock via other methods as you play.)

All of this comes after some other confirmations and reveals. For example, we know it features the original voice acting. There will also be a skip feature to more quickly get through story segments.

Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster will come to the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025. It also appeared on the Nintendo 3DS.

Bravely Default HD Remaster Has Original Voice Acting, Skip Feature

During the Nintendo Switch 2 Day 2 Nintendo Treehouse: Live presentation, new details about Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster came up regarding cutscenes, specifically the voice acting we’ll here and if we can skip them. All the original voice actors’ lines from the 3DS release will be used. We’ll also be able to skip these story segments if we’d like.

This came up early in the gameplay showcase as footage of the Temple of Wind segment appears. We got to hear Tiz start to speak. That’s when it was confirmed the original voice acting from the 3DS version of Bravely Default will be present in the HD Remaster on the Switch.

It’s also at that point that the Bravely Default HD Remaster Switch 2 cutscene autoplay and skip functionality came up. When the scene started, autoplay was in effect. This can be stopped, or the skip effect can start. During this presentation, the 2x skip option was shown. The Treehouse mentioned that this can allow someone to see a quick summary of what happened and avoid the actual longer story scenes. Also, while skip is in effect, you won’t hear any of the voice acting.

The Bravely series General Producer Tomoya Asano also released a statement about the game after its reveal on social media:

bravely default new announcement game series new square enix

Square Enix teased an announcement for a new Bravely series game, which will come later in 2024. This information came from a post on social media celebrating the third anniversary of Bravely Default 2.

The tweet in question shows a piece commemorative art, as well as a message thanking everyone for their comments at the end of 2023 and the beginning of 2024. Tomoya Asano, the producer of Bravely Default 2, noted at the end of the post that fans of the Bravely series can expect a new announcement sometime this year. He asks that people keep their eyes on the Square Enix social media s for the game series for the new reveal.

Asano also tweeted that there is a sale on Bravely Default 2 until February 26, 2024. You’ll be able to purchase the game for half price. Bravely Default 2 came out in 2021 and it is the third installment of the Bravely series. Unlike the previous two games, it has a new story and set of characters, but keeps the basic battle system throughout.

While there are three main games for the Bravely series, there have been plenty of spin-offs. The most recent one is Bravely Default: Brilliant Lights, which is a Japan-only mobile game. So far, Square Enix has not made any announcements in regards to an international release. This game uses the same battle system as the other games, and also lets players encounter characters from the mainline titles.

Bravely Default 2 is readily available on the Nintendo Switch and Windows PC.

Bravely Default I and II's OSTs are now available on Spotify. The two games' original soundtracks have been released under the composer Revo's official Spotify page. The soundtrack for Bravely Default I, known as Bravely Default: Flying Fairy in Japan, has also been released on Apple Music. [Thanks, AniPlaylist!]

Square Enix originally released the entire discography for the Bravely Default series back in 2019, but it was limited to Japan. The physical release of Bravely Default II's OST was teased back in December 2020, but was unavailable outside of Japan as well. Now people from around the world can listen to the series' most popular songs, such as "That Person's Name Is" and "The Vagrant of Love."

Notably, however, many of the songs listed both on Spotify and Apple Music have inconsistent song titles. "The Vagrant of Love" for example, is titled "Romantic Rogue" on Spotify, and "Romantic Vagrant" on Apple Music. The same goes for "That Person's Name Is", which is titled "He of the Name" on Spotify and "That of the Name" on Apple Music. Additionally, there is still no word on whether the Bravely Default II soundtrack will also be released on Apple Music.

The Bravely Default: Flying Fairy track list is 46 songs long. The Bravely Default II track list is 62 songs long and split into three "discs."

You can listen to the full Bravely Default: Flying Fairy soundtrack immediately on Spotify, as well as purchase a digital copy via Apple Music. Streaming for the Bravely Default II OST is currently only available on Spotify.

Lots of series try new things when making a jump to a new platform. They’re likely to do so when competitors, even those in the new-retro space like Octopath Traveler, are increasingly ambitious and experimental. They’re especially likely to do so when the last release in the franchise wasn’t well-received. But Bravely Default II? It doesn’t take the bait, for better and worse.

In Bravely Default II, you’ll control a party of adventurers, fighting monsters and such throughout the land and collecting and learning new jobs. There are some changes to the battle system, but they’re all very traditional. Combat uses speed-based turns instead of player and enemy phases! Monsters appear on the map instead of being purely random! It still feels like the first game, though. The Brave and Default functions still drive a lot of the strategy: go all-out with multiple attacks and leave yourself open to reprisal, or hold back and defend for later.

One of the first things you notice about Bravely Default II is the level of care and detail put into the environment. With depth-of-field effects and detailed diorama-like towns, the game successfully converts the aesthetic charm of the first game to higher-definition screens. In doing so, it makes the player really quite small on the screen. You might find yourself lost sometimes! But it does contribute to the game’s focus on a sense of scale.

Bravely Default II combat

You’ll also notice just how much of the game builds around micromanaging the job system. Menus are intuitive, sure, but they’re also built to easily cycle through screens and swap up abilities and equipment on the fly. Bravely Default II wants you to really dig into these things. And the pacing of the rollout of new jobs pushes you out of your comfort zone, too. The starting chapters intentionally give you jobs that aren’t really logical steps from one another, so you’ll go ahead and try something really new.

That’s good, so you don’t just go from "here’s the frontline axe job" to "here’s the other frontline axe job." The game will tempt you into trying buff moves or monster capturing. There’s a ton of jobs in the game, and yeah, eventually you’ll hit complementary ones. But the game doesn’t want you to be complacent.

Bravely Default II’s storytelling and world are chock full of quirk. The localization leans heavily into accents. The main adversaries all feel like caricatures, both rhetorically and visually. Your party has side chats about little flights of fancy. Every time you defeat a boss, you take their clothes. It’s weird, often endearingly so, but it establishes a tone to make sure you aren’t taking things too seriously.

All this lines up with Bravely Default II’s ethos: to evoke nostalgia of games past. It wants to feel old, while not seeming dated. It wants to feel comfortable, while not losing your attention. Delighting in the tropes of decades of Final Fantasy, it wants to be simple and pleasant and warm.

Bravely Default II is available now on Nintendo Switch. Characters from the game were recently added as Spirits to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Bravely Default II combat You’ll also notice just how much of the game builds around micromanaging the job system. It’s weird, often endearingly so, but it establishes a tone to make sure you aren’t taking things too seriously. bravely default ii party chat All this lines up with Bravely Default II’s ethos: to evoke nostalgia of games past. Square Enix made the Octopath Traveler team into a proper Business Division after the success of the Switch RPG. Producers Tomoya Asano and Masashi Takahashi shared more on ambitions for 2019 in Famitsu’s year-end talk with 119 developers.

Square Enix Business Division 11 executive Tomoya Asano and Octopath and Octopath Traveler producer Masashi Takahashi have worked together since the first Bravely Default. The two shared a bit on what they’ve been up to along with ambitions for 2019. Asano previously mentioned that they were working on Switch titles, but that it didn't mean they were only working on Switch games.

Tomoya Asano: “In 2019 we’ll have a challenge that is different from what we’ve had up to now with Octopath Traveler and the Bravely series. I’ll do my best! Business Division 11 is moving forward with the development of several games. Each one will surely please you guys! It will still be a little while until we can share information, but please look forward to it.”

Keyword for 2019: Retrospect and preparation

Masashi Takahashi: “We received from so many people in 2018, and we were able to release a brand-new title, Octopath Traveler. I’ll keep working on console games in 2019, too! First, we’ll properly reflect on ourselves before heading into the next season of preparations. I’ll do my utmost best to make games you can look forward to— from the Octopath series, the Bravely series, a new series, and more.

Octopath Traveler is available on the Nintendo Switch.  A new Bravely game was seemingly teased back in August and the series' official Twitter is still “ブレイブリー◯◯◯◯◯” (Bravely  ____) , so we'll be keeping an eye out for further updates.

You can check out the art book over at Amazon, but its pre-orders aren’t live yet.

Bravely Default originally released as Bravely Default: Flying Fairy in Japan in October 2012 for Nintendo 3DS. The expanded version, Bravely Default: For the Sequel, released in Japan and Europe in December 2013 followed by a North American release in February 2014.
